A LITTLE STORY:
This year I finally made ink out of pokeberry! That's the vivid pink you see in the piece. This berry has been used for ink for centuries. Civil war soldiers would use it to write letters home, the declaration of independence was even signed with pokeberry. Pokeberry can be both medicinal and poisonous and is also sometimes called inkberry. I foraged this berry that was growing near the porch by my mommas hydrangea bush/jungle. Another favorite ink I used in this piece is elderberry. The blue elderberry in this piece was made with wild berries I sustainably foraged in the high alpine mountains of California. Elderberries are one of my favorite berries. I made wild elderberry syrup with these berries too, its great to use as a supplement to help support your immune system, one neat berry.
A NOTE ON WILD BOTANICAL INKS:
These inks are one of a kind, alive and changing. Because of their wild nature each ink will change with time. I choose to celebrate this wonder and delight in the beauty of changing color. For best preserving of color I recommend keeping these pieces out of direct sunlight. Putting the piece behind UVA protected glass is a good option if color change is a concern.
