Hello
I'm Kaley Debrick, a visual artist from rural Kansas, who lives a semi nomadic life. I earned my BFA in Painting in 2012 and use my degree to create wild and pure works by investigating color origins. I'm interested in the "why" of beauty's existence & creating intimate visual conversations about creation (our natural world). Its wild structures, repetitive patterns & unique shapes keep me questioning and exploring. In 2015 I started concocting inks derived from plants & wild foraged materials. My debut show "botanic marque" in Eagle Colorado showcased pieces made with my wild plant ink in the spring of 2019. Since then I have released two wild ink collections in 2021 and showcased my original botanical color works at Hand & Land in Kansas City in 2022.
statement
The aging environment is telling a grand story. There is an order, a wild structure to the world, steady & consistent, arriving again and again each new day. I notice these structures in their complex patterns and simplest of shapes. The tall timbers & creek beds of Kansas. It was there where I learned what it meant to be purely inquisitive. I seek to translate these moments of dangerous & curious beauty I was exposed to in my youth. Creation says design matters, beauty matters, we matter. If beauty exists, what for? As I excavate these obscure subtleties of my created environment, I'm rethinking where my materials come from. My pursuit of wild foraged and natural materials teaches me of the great generosity and abundance I can take part in. The chemistry of concocting ink from roots, flowers, fruits, & seeds is as intriguing as the objects construction itself. Original design and ancient methods fuel the desire to make a purely wild work of art. This ink is ALIVE! I desire to translate these moments of scared place and continuous time that is unique only to my eyes. Nature's sympathy is carrying on and I want to take part. I hear a song of rejoicing from the meadow lark, the warmth of the suns glow, and the feeling of dirt underneath my feet. It's a form of rejection of the digital, artificial and synthetic world I see unfolding around me. I search to go backwards. Dig down to the roots of original design and ancient traditions to make a tangible purely wild work of art. Nature has a gentle way of inviting all senses and all people. I accept the invitation gladly, & attempt to translate what I’ve absorbed.
